Diahn Johnson, M.S, CCC-SLP
As a licensed and certified Speech-Language Pathologist who has been practicing since 1991. I have discovered that when my speech therapy client's needs are addressed relative to their likes and interests, they are much more motivated to engage in therapy and follow through with their goals. Once their interest is established, I expand upon that to make therapy a functional, fun and positive learning experience. For school aged children, I recognize that a child’s academic needs are often language-based and do my best to discover the child’s method of learning that will work best. You could best describe me as an “out of the chair” therapist who is creative and passionate not only about helping children succeed in communication but also adore animals (especially dogs), nature, the beach and cooking. It is not uncommon to see these passions incorporated in my therapy sessions whether it is making nature themed crafts, cooking fun foods, or trying out different science experiments.
I hold my Certificate of Clinical Competence with the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and received my Master’s of Science degree at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. I have assessed and treated children of all ages and adults within a wide range of settings including private practice, hospitals, public and private schools, children’s hospital and non-profit child development clinics. I have in depth experience with a range of communication disorders including speech delays, language learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, auditory/language processing deficits and fluency/stuttering.
My philosophy? Therapy should be fun, creative, and enjoyable to the point that my client does not even recognize that learning is occurring.
